Making your worksheet…

Sheet code: –

Type the code printed on a sheet to get the same sheet back, with its answers.

How it works

  1. Use the converter to check any number from 1 to 3,999.
  2. For a worksheet, choose the range and the task: numbers to Roman numerals, back, or mixed.
  3. Print it with the answer key, or solve it on screen.

The seven symbols

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Symbols are added from left to right, largest first: MDCLXVI is 1,666.

The subtraction rule

A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, but only in six pairs: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400 and CM = 900. So 1994 is MCMXCIV, and 4 is never written IIII in the standard form.

Questions and answers

Why do Roman numerals stop at 3,999?

Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M (1,000) and no symbol is repeated more than three times, so MMMCMXCIX (3,999) is the largest.

How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI: two thousands (MM), two tens (XX), five (V) and one (I).

Is there a zero in Roman numerals?

No. The Roman system has no symbol for zero.
